Established in 2015 by founder Dr. Dezjorn Gauthier, Black Trans Excellence Day is an annual celebration dedicated to honoring the contributions of Black transgender entrepreneurs and organizations. This significant day began as a “Manniversary” celebration and fundraiser, aimed at recognizing the achievements of transgender individuals of color and promoting transgender-owned businesses, all while raising funds to give back to the trans-community and assist with gender affirming care for Transmen of color.
Historical Context:
Originally titled “Dezjorn International Day,” the initiative was born out of Dr. Gauthier’s recognition of the challenges faced by Black transgender solo-prenuers and organizations in receiving positive media attention and funding. Despite their profound impact on the community, their accomplishments often went unrecognized. For over a decade, Dr. Gauthier advocated for the acknowledgment of these contributions, facing resistance from local authorities, including County officials, who dismissed the significance of the day, stating the day “was not an actual accomplishment or milestone”.
Milestone Achievement:
In 2025, after years of perseverance and advocacy, the City of Milwaukee (Dezjorn’s birth place) officially proclaimed April 21st as “Black Trans Excellence Day.” This recognition marked a pivotal moment in honoring the resilience, achievements, and ongoing impact of Black transgender individuals in the community.
Through this celebration, we aim to uplift voices, promote inclusivity, and highlight the extraordinary contributions of Black transgender entrepreneurs + businesses, paving the way for future generations.
